THREE ADULTS AND ONE TEENAGER LOSE THEIR LIVES ON
“DEAD MAN’S CURVE” – MOBILE COUNTY, ALABAMA
On Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2015, 50 year old driver, Michael W. Weatherspoon, 38 year old Crystal Dawn Cassity, 31 year old Melvin Louis Sowell and 14 year old Teresa Sowell were killed in the van in which they were riding on Chunchula Georgetown Road when they approached a bend in the road known as “Dead Man’s Curve”. The tire tracks lead to the accident site where the van left the road, overturned and struck a tree.
Local residents say that there have been many accidents here and this is not the first time that people have lost their lives in the “Dead Man’s Curve”. The posted speed limit for the road is 45 MPH and the residents say that many motorists are speeding. Then there are no warning signs about the upcoming bend in the road.
Now the family members of these victims are calling for action so that maybe it can help bring some meaning to the unfortunate sudden loss of these young lives. It is very sad that it takes multiple accidents and then loss of lives on one particular stretch of road to bring the matter to the attention of state and local authorities.
You can help bring awareness of this situation. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has a link on their website to alert them to road concerns such as “Dead Man’s Curve” (https://cpmsweb3.dot.state.al.us/RoadConcerns/). Please join in the families’ efforts to demand that something be done, hopefully before another life is lost.
There is an old saying that “what you don’t know won’t hurt you”. In this situation, it should say “what ALDOT doesn’t know, can hurt you”. Please help these families and contact ALDOT.
