For Memphis commuters, Sam Cooper Boulevard seems to have become a place where an accident was constantly waiting to happen in the month of March, 2015.
News Channel 3 – WREG Memphis reported various accidents and traffic delays during this particular time frame. Beginning on March 10, 2015, April Thompson with WREG Memphis reported that the city leaders were already aware of a well known trouble spot at the intersection of Sam Cooper and Tillman when on March 10, 2015 a 40 year old was hit and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of Sam Cooper and Tillman while riding his bicycle. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving on a suspended/revoked driver’s license.
On March 12, 2015, Ashley Forest with WREG Memphis reported that the Memphis Police Department had responded to a call regarding a car that had flipped over in the middle of the street on Sam Cooper Boulevard. WMC Actions News 5 reported on March 17, 2015 that a 29 year old died in this accident after his car went off the boulevard and overturned several times.
Then, on March 27, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. on a beautiful Friday afternoon, one person was killed following a horrific 4 vehicle crash on Sam Cooper (head on collision) and shut down the boulevard for several hours to investigate the crash.
Three fatalities on Sam Cooper Boulevard in one month is far too many. One might want to rethink their travel plans when going through Memphis – regardless of the time of day.
