Confederate Flag, should it stay or should it go?Unless you have been staying on a desert island this week with no communication to the world, everyone knows that the Confederate Flag is coming down from flagpoles all over the country. This allegedly racist flag has been a major conversation piece – especially for the State of Alabama even though the issue began because of a racist shooting in South Carolina.
To begin with, this flag never should have been flown at any government institution. It does not represent any one particular state. It is representative of a group of 13 states that declared their independence and seceded from the United States of America. The battle flag was never adopted by the Confederate Congress, never flew over any state capitols during the Confederacy, and was never officially used by Confederate veterans’ groups. In all reality, it probably would have been relegated to Civil War museums if it had not been resurrected by the resurgence of the KKK (which more than likely is the reason why our generation now relates this flag to hatred alone).
Well now that the State of Alabama has moved in the right direction to remove the flags from the lawns of government property, it appears that there are a few Confederate Flags they have missed that will be costly to remove. The Confederate Flag is embedded into the Coat of Arms of Alabama. And, the Coat of Arms is part of the following: (1) Flag of the Governor of Alabama; (2) Seal of the Governor of Alabama; (3) Seal of the Lieutenant Governor of Alabama; (4) Seal of the Governor-Elect of Alabama; (5) Seal of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles; (6) Seal of the Alabama Department of Public Health; (7) Seal of the Alabama Department of Public Safety; and (8) the Seal of the Securities Commission of Alabama. So it looks like if Alabama wants to stay politically correct and remove the Confederate Flag, it is time to get busy to revise their Coat of Arms so it can be replaced on the 8 Seals of the State that bear this flag. And explain to the taxpayers why their tax dollars will have to be spent to remove this “evil” from the system. So – should it stay or should it go?
