The alleged negligence of a church volunteer has lead to the death of a young girl.
On July 28, 2011, 24-year-old Bobby Joe Sasser was driving a group of teenagers back to their homes in Columbia from a overnight “lock-in” concert hosted by the Christian band Skyhook in Mumford. The van, owned by River of Life Church in Columbia, struck a light pole and flipped, landing on a triangular median of grass. The accident precipitated a horrific scene: crumpled metal, scattered water bottles and first aid supplies, and the laments of injured children claimed the day. State troopers are currently investigating the alleged possibility of adult escort Sasser falling asleep at the wheel.
14-year-old MacKenzie Turner is believed to have died on the scene upon impact. Three other children, ranging in age from eleven to fifteen, sustained great enough injuries to warrant helicopter deliveries to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. They have been reported to be in stable conditions. The remaining children along with the driver were brought to a local hospital which refused to report on their conditions.
The hearts of all of us at Ron Kim Law go out to all of those who were affected by this horrific accident. If anything is to be learned by such ghastly circumstances, it is that proactive, defensive driving is a necessity when braving the dangerous roads of today’s world.
