GETTING OUR CHILDREN TO AND FROM SCHOOL – SAFELY
Last year on, October 23, 2015, another child has been injured for simply trying to go to school. The 13-year old teen had to be airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital after being struck by a truck as he crossed the road to get on a school bus that was going to Hernando Middle School in Desoto County, Mississippi. Unfortunately the young man is in critical condition.
The Desoto County School System safely transports 18,000 students each day. Desoto County bus drivers are subject to a thorough background check and pre-employment drug screening. Annual and random drug and alcohol screenings are also conducted. All bus drivers must be in possession of a current Commercial Drivers License with Passenger-(P) and Safety-(S) endorsements and pass a DOT physical. In addition recertification is required every two years along with several hours of in-service training conducted several times per year. Drivers are held to the highest professional standards and are supervised and supported in order to ensure students are transported safely each and every day.
Bus drivers taking children to and from school each day pretty much take the same routes every day. If you are running late to get to work, that is your fault – not the fault of the school bus. So please remember: If you are in a hurry and running late to get to work, you will really be late if you strike a child trying to get there due to your impatience.
We at Ron Kim Law could not agree more with Transportation Director John Caldwell “It is dark and we ask all drivers to prepare to stop when they see the flashing lights of a school bus.” So lets join together in GETTING OUR CHILDREN TO AND FROM SCHOOL – SAFELY
