Motorcycle Statistics Show Rise in Fatal Accidents . Since the foundation of the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 1929, thirty-eight troopers have fallen in the line of duty. Of these thirty-eight, over a third lost their lives in motorcycle accidents. Each year, approximately 135 Tennesseans are involved in fatal motorcycle wrecks. Surprisingly enough, all but a handful were wearing their helmets at the time of the incidents. In fact, the number of deadly accidents involving supposedly safe motorcyclists has been on a steady climb since 1994. The majority of these accidents are caused by drunk driving and confusion at intersections regarding right-of-way. Although the state’s yearly number of motorcycle accidents continues to grow, legislatures have refused to pass any proactive or reactionary laws on the matter.
