Fatal Pit Bull Attack

On July 20, 2010, 71-year-old William Parker was attacked by two angry pit bulls near the intersection of Poplar and Manassas in Memphis, Tennessee. Parker was walking through a field that he and his neighbors frequently used as a shortcut from Manassas to Poplar en route to a convenience store when he was attacked by the two large dogs. His daughter, Gardenia Parker was notified of the situation when a neighbor showed up to her front door. Grabbing a stick and a beer bottle as a quick, quaint arsenal, she attempted to save her father. Over the course of the attack, Gardenia sustained a broken elbow and several puncture wounds; Kevin Stringfellow, a neighbor who also attempted to provide assistance, suffered arm wounds and lost a finger; two MFD paramedics were injured; and William Parker was killed. Fingers are pointed at Sherry Wooten, the woman left responsible for the dogs at that time. Wooten knew the dogs would be a danger to pedestrians but released them to go outside regardless, and when pedestrians were attacked, she ignored their pleas for help. Such irresponsible actions brought upon her a pot pourri of charges, the most serious being reckless homicide. Dog owner negligence can be a serious issue, bringing injury and even death to innocent others. Our prayers go out to the Parker family and all of those needlessly injured by this senseless attack.
