Motorcycle Statistics Show Rise in Fatal Accidents

Since the foundation of the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 1929, thirty-eight troopers have fallen in the line of duty. Of these thirty-eight, over a third lost their lives in motorcycle accidents. Each year, approximately 135 Tennesseans are involved in fatal motorcycle wrecks. Surprisingly enough, all but a handful were wearing their helmets at the time of the incidents. In fact, the number of deadly accidents involving supposedly safe motorcyclists has been on a steady climb since 1994. The majority of these accidents are caused by drunk driving and confusion at intersections regarding right-of-way. Although the state’s yearly number of motorcycle accidents continues to grow, legislatures have refused to pass any proactive or reactionary laws on the matter. Therefore, until change is made or the road becomes a safer place, it is likely that such atrocities will continue to be on the rise.
